Janata Mahavidyalaya was started by Hon’ble Shri S.B. JIWATODE GURUUJI in the year 1958 to educate the students especially belonging to socially and economically backward sections of the society.
Initially, under-graduate courses in Arts and Commerce were introduced. In the year 1961, under-graduate courses in Science were also introduced.
It was the lone college in the combined Chandrapur-Gadchiroli District when it was established.
In the year 1971, Post-graduate course was started in Commerce and in the year 1980 in Arts (Political Science and Economics) considering the need of the students. The college has recently been Re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore, with B-Grade with 2.67 CGPA.
The college has specious and well equipped laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Home Economics, Geography, Microbiology and Computer Science and experienced faculty members.
Considering the changing trends and advancement of technology, the management felt it necessary to introduce the subjects Computer Science and Microbiology and they were introduced in the year 1994 at under graduate level. Separate Laboratories were established for these subjects as per the norms of the university. Apart from the staff appointed for these subjects, experienced members from other nearby are invited to deliver lectures on topics of interest.
Janata Mahavidyalaya has a library with a stock of about 50,000 books of different subjects. These include text books and reference books. The college subscribes to journals of repute. Finding that the present Library is insufficient to accommodate the increasing number of books, the management has approached university grants commission with a proposal for assistance. UGC has approved the proposal and sanctioned assistance. The Library hall and reading room were constructed on the first floor.
Considering the importance of the subjects computer science, microbiology and chemistry in the present world scenario and also considering the availability of well developed laboratories for these subjects and library facilities, management of Janata Mahavidyalaya felt it necessary to open Post-graduate courses in the subjects Computer Science, Microbiology and Chemistry and submitted proposal to Nagpur University, which accepted the proposal to start Post-Graduate courses in Janata Mahavidyalaya from the session 2001-2002 and permission was granted by Government of Maharashtra.
The college is no less remarkable in the field of Sports and Games and other extra-curricular activities. Students brought laurels to the college by standing in significant positions in the state level, inter-collegiate level events. College provides all facilities and encourages students to participate in different events. The students of this college under the National Service Scheme, in the previous years, adopted certain nearby villages Chandrapur and did a significant work for the development.
There shall be two examinations leading to the Degree of Master of Science, namely M.Sc., Previous (PART I) and M.Sc. Final (PART II) Examinations.
